Thunderbolt confirmed working for booting

The new Thunderbolt interface available on the latest Mac computers reportedly enables users to boot from an external drive. In a Twitter post, AnandTech‘s Anand Shimpi confirmed the ability to boot Mac OS X from the Promise RAID system that began shipping this week. Using ThunderBolt in Target Disk mode provides a new avenue for troubleshooting systems, in a similar way to existing FireWire ports.

In a Support FAQ entry, Apple also confirms that users can take advantage of Target Disk mode with Thunderbolt-attached storage or two Macs. The company notes that Thunderbolt will be the default boot option when Thunderbolt and FireWire drives are attached, though users can simply disconnect the Thunderbolt device if they wish to use the FireWire drive instead.

Apple’s online store now includes a two-meter Thunderbolt cable, along with several Pegasus R-series RAID storage systems manufactured by Promise.
